FOR FREEDOM AND HONOUR
Biography of Peter Wilkinson Cavanagh

Peter as a Navy Boy Peter as a Airman

As a fifteen year old Peter Wilkinson Cavanagh served in World War One in the Royal Australian Navy. As a mature forty year old Peter served in World War Two in the Royal Australian Air Force. His service to his nation is ingrained in marble yet what insight can we gain into a man by his epitaph, For Freedom and Honour.

The publication "For Freedom and Honour" delves into the life and events that lead to Peter Cavanagh's untimely death.

The book begins with a divided Australia and through Federation of the states to a childhood in a developing nation. The new Australian nation was soon embroiled in a gobal war, World War One.

It was under these circumstances of sending our men to war that we find a 15 year old boy joining the ranks of the Royal Australian Navy.

The manuscript journeys through the Naval years in war and at peace. From life on a Tall Ships through Coal fired Destroyers and to Submarines and civilian life. We delve through the events of Peter's time and journey through marriage, children, and into events of The Great Depression.

Shortly after the recovery from The Depression Australia again finds itself at War. Peter continues to support his country through his efforts in the community. With the growing war draws nearer to the Australian mainland Peter is not content without making as big as contribution as he can in defence of his nation his town and his family

Peter, as a 42 year old enlists again in Australian Defence Forces, this time in the ranks of the RAAF.

It was an secret overseas mission that ultimately caused Peter's demise though he had returned to Australia and his duties before his death.

As a result of secrecy around his Mission and the suddenness of his death Peter received an undeserved low key burial, a stark contrast to the internment of Tully's first war grave some eighteen months before.
